The Category Quality Manager is responsible for overseeing quality and driving continuous improvement for our $1.2B Lawn Fertilizer and Grass Seed Category.  The Category Quality Manager will act as a core member on project teams with cradle to grave ownership of suppliers, manufacturing, customers and consumers.  Key responsibilities will be developing and training site Quality Leads in Scotts quality assurance and control procedures, driving Root Cause Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement across the category, and audit sites and suppliers against centralized standards. The Category Quality Manager role reports into the Director of Corporate Quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a core member on project teams with ownership of suppliers, manufacturing, customers and consumers

  • Develop and train site Quality Lead in Quality Assurance and Control Procedures

  • Audit sites against centralized standards 

  • Monitor compliance for manufacturing plants against relevant regulations and the Scotts Quality Management System (in-process testing, product analysis, etc.). Develop action plans to address any gaps through implementation or refinement of operating procedures.

  • Identify, design, and implement innovative continuous improvement initiatives across the category.

  • Champion efforts to drive out manufacturing variation by analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and leading implementation of appropriate short and long-term solutions.

  • Participate in development and prioritization of capital projects.

  • Create and deliver training to develop continuous improvement skills at all levels of the organization.

  • Document internal and vendor related quality issues and work to define root cause and corrective actions that eliminate recurrence.  

  • Define the costs of poor quality and develop solutions to reduce them.

  • Review SAP QM data, QINs, and Voice of the Consumer data to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.

  • Coordinate and assist in the completion of production trials.

  • Ensure that safe practices, operating guidelines, and standard operating procedures are adhered to.

  • Ensure proficient and timely communication of data to business partners. 

  • Will be required to travel domestic and internationally 25 to 50% of the time.


Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quality Systems, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Knowledge and expertise in quality management and operational excellence.

  • Minimum 5+ years experience in a similar role with a focus on experience in product development, project and vendor management in a manufacturing setting.

  • Theory/functionality of manufacturing systems and unit operations

  • Continuous improvement techniques (FMEA, Root Cause Analysis, CAPA)

  • Statistical and analytical methods, Process measurement and control

  • Change management

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing multiple continuous improvement projects in a collaborative environment

  • Exceptional ability to build and maintain relationships across a network of sites and corporate support functions

  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communications, organization, resource management, and technology utilization skills

  • Proven ability to handle changing priorities while maintaining a sense of urgency

  • Strong business acumen, with a solid record of leading change and delivering results
