We are looking for a Product Development Manager (PDM) in Marysville, OH! 

The PDM will lead a cross functional and technical team responsible for product development of our consumer herbicide product portfolio. The Manager’s direct reports will include weed scientists and formulators with project leadership extending to our packaging engineering, regulatory and marketing partners. The PDM is the primary commercialization liaison between R&D and the larger cross functional team. 

The PDM will be responsible for setting project expectations, timelines, budgets, resource management, project management, and mentoring members of the team.  This role reports to the Category Director for Controls and Hydroponic Nutrition R&D.


What you will do in this role:

  • Bring new products from inception to commercialization in the consumer pesticide market.  Identify, evaluate and advocate for innovative ideas and move them through the SMG innovation process

  • Provide leadership to the team through coaching and performance management to develop the future generation of R&D leaders 

  • Identify  strategic partners of  3rd party technologies, evaluate partnership agreements (CDA’s MTA’s etc.), and communicate the technology link to our core business needs  

  • Build and maintain a network of external universities, researchers, suppliers and industry groups to expand our R&D capabilities.

  • Partner with the Procurement team to identify, evaluate and advocate for innovative active ingredients as part of the SMG innovation process

  • Create a team culture  that encourages and promotes innovative solutions.

  • Gain alignment with senior leadership through regular project  milestone updates

  • Participate in developing the business strategy to drive category growth 

  • Provide technical expertise to support the maintenance of current product lines

  • Manage individual projects and the overall team budget

  • Gather consumer insight derived from both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods such as focus groups, ethnography, surveys etc. to steer innovation and product development


What you will need to be successful:

  • Substantial experience in new product development of consumer packaged goods; ideally turf and ornamental pesticide products; including managing the daily aspects of existing products and preparing, supporting and implementing new product introductions.

  • Appreciation for the key roles of other functions such as: Marketing, Regulatory, Quality, Procurement,  and Supply Chain, in a consumer goods business.

  • Be detail orientated with ability to multitask in a dynamic environment where success depends on deep internal and external collaborations. 

  • Have knowledge of experimental design,  EPA registrations, pesticide modes-of-action,  and full product lifecycle development from conception to launch.  This may include ideation/technology scouting, concept refinement, development, commercialization, and collaboration with internal stakeholders, conducting research in support of product launches and cost savings initiatives.

  • Demonstrated experience communicating scientific concepts to senior and executive leadership; outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Proven success in team building, leadership and talent development.

  • Experience partnering effectively with marketing, regulatory agencies and senior management to develop new product concepts based on consumer insights. 

  • Strong ability to influence key stakeholders through technical expertise and leadership skills.

  • Exceptional relationship building / interpersonal skill and the ability to work with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Educational Qualifications:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Weed Science/Biology/Horticulture, Chemistry or Engineering with 5 or more years of people and project management experience. 

and/or

  • Advanced business degree (MBA) with science training (MS, BS) and product commercialization experience, with 5 or more years of people and project management experience.
