The Quality and Continuous Improvement Manager is responsible for overseeing quality and driving continuous improvement for our Fort Madison, IA manufacturing operation. The Quality and Continuous Improvement Manager has 3-shift operation responsibility executing the Scotts Quality Management System, managing the Analytical testing Lab, addressing and resolving quality issues, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring all products meet specifications prior to release for shipment. The Quality and Continuous Improvement Manager reports into corporate quality, but also acts as an extended member of the Fort Madison or Santa Rosa plant leadership team.

In this role you will:

  • Develop and implement quality and continuous improvement strategy for each manufacturing site.

  • Lead a team of 8. Review current skill sets/determine developmental needs of direct reports to maintain a technically competent staff.

  • Monitor compliance of facility against relevant regulations and the Scotts Quality Management System (in-process testing, product analysis, lot labeling, etc.). Develop action plans to address any gaps through implementation or refinement of operating procedures.

  • Identify, design, and implement innovative continuous improvement initiatives to improve plant production efficiencies.

  • Champion efforts to drive out manufacturing variation by analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and leading implementation of appropriate short and long-term solutions

  • Participate in development and prioritization of capital requests

  • Create and deliver training to develop continuous improvement skills at all levels of the organization

  • Document internal and vendor related quality issues and work to define root cause and corrective actions that eliminate recurrence.   

  • Define the costs of poor quality and develop solutions to reduce them.

  • Review SAP QM data, QINs, and Voice of the Consumer data to identify issues and opportunities for improvement.

  • Coordinate and assist in the completion of production trials.

  • Manage the quality assurance activities of the Analytical Testing Labs and that analytical equipment is properly maintained, capable of supporting plant operations, and has records up to date and in compliance with Corporate, State, and Federal Regulatory Requirements 

  • Ensure that safe practices, operating guidelines, and standard operating procedures are adhered to.

  • Provide work products that are accurate, complete and appropriate to the target audience.

  • Ensure proficient and timely communication of data to business partners.

The perfect person will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Quality Management, Engineering, Chemistry or related sciences.

  • Knowledge and expertise in analytical and quality management.

  • Minimum 5 to 10  years experience in a similar role with a focus on experience in a manufacturing setting.

Recognized technical abilities and practical experience with strong capabilities in the following areas:

  • Self motivated, results-oriented and ability to build productive relationships.

  • Ability to work in an ambiguous and fast paced environment.

  • Theory/functionality of manufacturing systems and unit operations 

  • Continuous improvement techniques (Lean, TPM, Root Cause Analysis, Quick Changeover/SMED, Process Centerlines) 

  • Statistics and analytical methods, Process measurement and control 

  • Change management 

  • Demonstrated leadership experience managing multiple continuous improvement projects in a collaborative environment 

  • Exceptional ability to build and maintain relationships across a network of sites and corporate support functions 

  • Excellent analytical, interpersonal, communications, organization, resource management, and technology utilization skills 

  • Proven ability to handle changing priorities while maintaining a sense of urgency 

  • Strong business acumen, with a solid record of leading change and delivering results
