Network Administrator/Engineer

Job Description:

This position's main responsibilities involve the planning, design, development, configuration, deployment, operations and analysis of our existing and new network topologies.  Activities include working with vendors, electricians, controls engineers, and the corporate Business Transformations (IT) teams for new system; design, configure and testing of network; troubleshoot issues on 2nd and 3rd level network support in order to diagnose and provide incident resolution. This position will also work closely with the Controls Engineering group to implement and drive machine level changes with projects, upgrades, and migration strategies.  

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide long term planning and strategy for the Machine level equipment network.

  • Design new network services that improve performance, reliability, business value, costs, and deployment time.

  • Develop configurations, network documentation, and drive towards vision for a Scalable, robust, resilient machine level network.

  • Develop standards, policies, and procedures surrounding machine level network

  • Serve as key liaison to network vendors, subject matter experts, and BT groups on the services they provide.

  • Provide support for network Incidents and participate in Root Cause Analyses.

  • Learn from and develop Controls Engineers into a Network support staff

  • Support initiatives with our controls group, BT team members, etc.

  • Provide local project leadership for all system implementations; coordinate installation maintenance and enhancement of personal computers, thin-clients, servers and Local Area Network/Wide Area Network(LAN/WAN)

Job Requirements:

  • BA/BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Management Information Systems or equivalent with an emphasis on networking and security

  • CompTIA A+, Network+

  • Microsoft Certified IP Professional( MCITP) or Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA) with emphasis in Windows 2008 Server, Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8

  • 2-5 years general PC troubleshooting, network security and troubleshooting, PC builds, software deployments, PC security and malware remediation, General Active Directory user and computer administration, IIS, DNS, DHCP, Windows Server Update Service (WSUS)

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Broad knowledge of contemporary network elements and in-depth knowledge of those used in the Scotts environment to include Cisco routers, switches, Wi-Fi, VPN, DNS, DHCP, and structured cabling.   

  • Hardware experience with Dell, HP servers, Cisco switches, Cisco Servers, APC battery backups, 

  • Excellent understanding of processes and systems used for deploying and maintaining a Network.

  • Thorough knowledge of networking technologies such as TCP/IP, Firewalls, network switches and routers

  • Solid foundation of Network implementation, support, troubleshooting, switches, servers, etc.

  • Solid foundation of Computer hardware: laptops, Desktops, DNS

  • Thin client and remote desktop experience.

  • Advanced skills in virtual software, backup and restore technologies and database management  ( MS SQL)

  • VMWare, SQL, windows server, McAffe AntiVirus, apc, etc.

  • Proven experience in performance monitoring, security scanning and monitoring, PC deployment and change management procedures

  • IntraVue software knowledge a plus

  • Controls equipment that interfaces with a network including but not limited to: PLC’s, Drives, RTD devices, Remote I/O, DeviceNet, ControlNet, HMI’s, etc

  • Ability to translate user concerns and needs to actionable tasks and ultimate solutions

Work Experience:

  • Mid-Level; 2-5 years in an IT or Plant IT/OT environment.

  • Information technology networking experience in a Windows environment

  • Experience with Virtual Server environments and VMWare

  • Experience with Cisco Switches, Domain Name Servers (DNS) and Antivirus software

  • Experience with Microsoft remote desktop

  • Experience with designing and deploying new network elements and systems.

  • Experience with standardized network monitoring/management systems. 

  • Understanding of project management methodologies.

  • Experience with creating policy and procedure documentation. 

  • Experience with a manufacturing/industrial environment a plus

  • Experience with end level devices Allen Bradley PLC’s, flow meters, HMI, VFD’s, etc a


  • Experience with Wonderware and or Factory Talk View a plus

Physical Demands and Work Environment: 

  • While the work Environment is in the office, it will require much of the time in the production plant performing analysis, configuration, testing, cabling, spot checks, preventative maintenance, etc.
