We are looking for a Scientist to join our R&D/Product Development Team at our Head Office in Vancouver, WA, in support of our Growing Environment and Hardware categories. Hawthorne’s Growing Environment products are designed for use in indoor Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) and include heating, cooling, humidification/ dehumidification, odor mitigation, and air circulation. 

We are open to relocation from anywhere in the U.S.

This is a hybrid model with 2 days per week in office.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Lead all technical material and scientific advancements in the Growing Environment and Hardware categories, specifically air and water filtration products to drive product development and process improvements such as concept, specification, product validation, and design to meet specified cost and performance parameters

  • Work to optimize materials used for filtration and the construction of filters within product portfolio with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and category teams

  • In collaboration with procurement, manage vendor relationships with domestic and international suppliers while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specifications

  • Seek out innovations above and beyond the supplier capabilities

  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research in problem areas or areas of opportunity for the business

  • Keep abreast of new technologies for the purpose of recommending changes in existing programs or new programs warranted by such developments

  • Partner closely with other Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the categories they support

  • Aid in the creation and development of R&D product roadmaps

  • Aid in data analysis of market trends and competitive benchmarking

  • Aid category managers and product development with UX (user experience)

  • Participate in the initial production phases of product/process design and all subsequent manufacturing inquiries and problems

  • Travel up to 10% of the time, sometimes internationally

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • MS or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field preferred

  • Focus in material properties or chemical properties preferred

  • 2-5 years experience in materials research and development, preferably in hydro, CEA, or horticulture industry

  • Experience in materials science and chemical engineering preferred

  • Experience with filtration (water and/or air) required

  • Programming capabilities with a mathematical programming language, such as Matlab or Excel

  • Attention to details

  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams

  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to follow standard company processes

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (presentations and reports to management)

  • Excellent quantitative skills
