The Scientist (Pest Management) will work to design & support a diverse pesticide portfolio.  This person will be pivotal in defining insecticidal & fungicidal products for the retail and commercial hydroponic segment, as well as participate in the consumer gardening segment. Associates are expected to participate in our business segment, as a hands-on consumer, and a hands-on researcher, so that they may develop keen insights that contribute to the commercialization of novel products. The eager scientist will have experience in pests and pathogens common to the horticulture and hydroponic industry (including ornamental plants, fruits/vegetables, and high value crops such as hemp). It is vital that the incumbent possess a working knowledge of experimental design and analysis, report writing, synthetic and natural pesticide modes-of-action and regulatory frameworks. A strong scientific curiosity, excellent communication skills, initiative and independence are also essential characteristics. The scientist will mine technologies and match them to both articulated and unarticulated grower needs to drive the retail and consumer hydroponic & garden pest management category.  This position reports directly to the R&D Product Development Manager. 

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Directs the planning and implementation of field, insectary and greenhouse biological research trials, including trial initiation, data collection, data analysis, report preparation and regulatory documentation. 

  • Functions as part of a cross-functional team that identifies consumer pest control needs, and then finds or creates solutions to meet the needs. 

  • Help to build business strategy by providing thought leadership on technology, research, agricultural & IPM trends and practices that can be applied to synthetic and natural pest control products. 

  • Builds and maintains a network of external universities, researchers, industry groups and supply partners.

  • Develops and follows R&D Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

  • Communicates scientific concepts and research to senior leadership (including Directors, GM’s VP’s, COO, CEO and Board Members); demonstrates outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Critical in support of EPA and state registrations, potential partnership or acquisitions, competitive analysis and cost-out initiatives

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Ph.D. in pest management (entomology or pathology) preferred, Masters and other candidates with significant and relevant experience developing pest management products will also be considered

  • In depth knowledge of entomology, pathology,  IPM, pesticide toxicology and mode-of-action related to consumer garden and commercial high value crops including hemp preferred

  • Willingness to function as part of a hands-on scientific team and mentor/develop other team members (biology technicians/interns)
