Specialist, Controls - Formulations position will support process and formulation product development from bench-top experiments to commercial launch.  This eager chemist or chemical engineer will conduct research, prepare liquid and granular formulations, conduct laboratory tests, analyze results and prepare appropriate documentation. The Specialist will generate samples for Good Laboratory Practices work, Biology field trials and package stability testing and participate in the analysis of those results. The individual will create ingredient and formulation specifications within the Scotts Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) documentation system. This role is a critical part of the product development team, interacting directly with Packaging Development, Biology, Marketing, Purchasing, Regulatory and Supply Chain in order to bring consumer pesticide products to market.

 

In this role you will:

  • Develop commercially viable formulations and processes consistent with business unit goals;

  • Design and execute experimental plans to develop formulas and obtain qualitative and quantitative data required for product launch;

  • Create and verify new formulations at lab, pilot, and manufacturing scales;

  • Document, analyze, and report data to cross-functional teams; 

  • Create, route and approve ingredient and formula specifications; 

  • Provide hands-on support for (manufacturing trials, establishing biology trials, and collecting biology trial data as needed; 

  • Manage chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheet storage and archiving; 

  • Prepare and arrange chemical samples for shipment and waste, per DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations; 

  • Perform all project tasks in compliance with corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety principles; 

  • Maintain laboratory upkeep, including chemical and equipment supply. 

The perfect person will have:

  • B.A/B.S in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or Material Science minimum;

  • 3 years experience in a formulation-related role (preferred)

  • Familiarity working in a laboratory environment including using, but not limited to, the following: media mills, basic analytical instrumentation, quantitative chemical analysis, and chemical reactivity (e.g., acids, bases, flammables);  

  • Scientific curiosity and rigor

  • Initiative and drive to identify opportunities and increase their overall contributions

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, strong math skills; 

  • Networking skills to build support system and seek out new technologies 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Adaptability and flexibility to work independently as well as in a team environment

  • Basic computer skills including: use of spreadsheets, word processing and email
