Automation Engineering  Manager needed within the Scotts Miracle Gro family of companies. This is a corporate engineering role responsible for identifying, evaluating, and executing automation/controls projects. MUST have a strong automation/controls engineering background. 

As an Automation Engineering Manager you will represent Project Sponsors and will influence highly-motivated teams of cross-functional experts; implement and administer effective scoping, scheduling, and budgeting of facility development, and process improvement projects; and develop, use, and maintain project management tools. You will operate with considerable latitude, performing senior professional level work. Your creative and innovative management style will motivate others in developing innovative solutions to important, complex program requirements.

This role is currently 100% remote and may require moving back to an office environment when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. 


  • Identify, evaluate, and execute company automation/controls project from start to finish

  • Projects will be for a manufacturing or warehousing environment and could include: automation/robotic material movement, processing equipment, process control systems, and facility automation systems

  • Resource automation execution needs either internally or externally

  • Collaborate, influence and facilitate communication between business and operations from initial requirements to final implementation to seek agreements and commitment

  • Prepare timely and actionable analyses, forecasts, and recommendations for assigned projects to ensure achievement of business objectives.

  • Develop and provide guidance to others to prepare facility designs, and evaluate risks and benefits of alternate designs

  • Advise testing/ training tools and new methodologies and oversee development and execution of mechanical and system testing and debugging plans

  • Develop future plans and recommendations for functional design initiatives

  • Support and evaluate automated and information technology systems and strategies to optimize and ensure quality and stability of automation systems through future expansion, replacement, or upgrade

  • Scan and analyze marketplace, industry, company, vendor products, and services, etc. to stay updated with technology trends and best practices

  • Detect issues and opportunities, and implement improved practices for equipment while focusing on increasing effectiveness and efficiency

  • Analyze business requirements and identify internal/external automation solutions to meet these requirements.

  • Communicate daily/weekly/monthly with the business, technical, and quality representatives within the area of support through the process.

  • Consult with the manufacturing plants engineering teams as they conduct locally led automation projects.


  • BS required; BS in controls/electrical or mechanical engineering preferred

  • 8-12+ years of experience within the automation industry

  • Must have extensive experience managing projects relating to automated assembly equipment

  • Superior organizational skills

  • Ability to effectively communicate internally and externally

  • Strong customer relation skills

  • Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time
