We are looking for a Biology Technician who will join our Control Products Biology team.

This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH. Not familiar with Columbus? Visit

The Biology Technician will assist with the execution of scientific experiments that may include maintenance practices, nutrition, experimental treatments, and pesticide application. The ideal candidate should feel comfortable working in a hands-on environment and receiving project direction from supervisors. The objectives for the team are to develop novel and value-added pesticide products in support of the controls business at Scotts.

In this role you will:

  • Prepare and manage field trial experiments according to trial documentation provided; Record experimental results and report them as directed;

  • Assist in the maintenance of insect colonies, field trial areas and associated machinery;

  • Maintain working areas in an efficient and safe manner (ex: ensure safety/laboratory supplies are stocked, field equipment is stored, storage areas are maintained, manage chemical inventory/SDS storage on a regular basis including experimental material;

  • Establish trial areas using agricultural equipment (ex: tractor, mower, etc.);

  • Comply with company environment health and safety policy;

  • Collaborate with internal and external resources;

  • Take part in weekend duty rotations as required and provide holiday and sick day cover for colleagues;

  • Become proficient in SMG computer programs and assist in management and biology tasks as necessary;

  • Assist from time to time in other support activities e.g. delivering trials samples, help with tours, Public Relations and field day events;

  • Some travel may be required.

The perfect person will have:

  • Experience within the lawn and garden maintenance.

  • Degree in biology, agronomy, entomology or horticulture or industry experience in a laboratory, greenhouse or field setting, desired;

  • Attention to detail, accuracy and basic math skills;

  • Observational skills to identify visual differences in plant performance and insect behavior.

  • Maintenance and preparation of test insect species (e.g cockroaches, mosquito and bed bugs);

  • Ability to follow work instructions and test protocols;

  • Personal drive and ability to be a self-starter and work unsupervised;

  • Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, tractors, utility carts, sprayers, spreaders and other typical equipment used to maintain lawns and greenhouses;

  • Ability to work in adverse situations including outdoors for prolonged periods in hot/wet/cold conditions;

  • Ability to withstand excessive standing, kneeling, or bending during planting and data collection;

  • Familiarity with field plot design and statistical analysis;

  • Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication;

  • Ability to lift 50lb required.
