We are looking for a Data Scientist who will join our Pricing Finance team.

This position will be based at The Scotts Miracle-Gro world headquarters in Marysville, a suburb of Columbus, OH.  Not familiar with Columbus? Visit columbusregion.com/columbus-2020/

 The Data Scientist role is a new one at Scotts responsible for supporting the Pricing Analytics Team.  This is primarily a technical role, responsible for building and maintaining analytics and reporting resources for the Pricing Team and other business partners.  This role will be responsible for conducting assessments of business problems through conversations with internal customers in Finance, Sales, and Marketing; formulating a proposal for solving those business problems through analytics and machine learning; defining whether the scope of the solution can be accomplished internally or external consultants must be engaged; and guiding the project to conclusion.  The role will also maintain key relationships with IT and reporting teams and will manage relationships with external analytics and data vendors.

This role will be the highest level subject matter expert in machine learning and SQL in Finance and possibly at Scotts. A successful candidate will have to be self-directed and able to pursue learning and form proposals without the input of a manager with greater technical expertise.

In this role you will:

  • Work entrepreneurially within the organization to assess stakeholder needs, develop plans to address needs using machine learning and analytics tools, determine whether scope of project requires external resources, bring projects to completion;
  • Build and maintain SQL tables and queries to support Pricing & Analytics team;
  • Assess types of data needed to meet analytics needs and work with BT/Data Warehouse teams to get the needed data resources in place;
  • Develop ad hoc analysis and data visualization in PowerBI and/or Tableau;
  • Build and maintain machine learning models (Python & SQL running on Azure Databricks) to conduct What If analysis;
  • Manage projects and maintain relationships with outside vendors responsible for collecting data and building machine learning models;
  • Support Pricing Team and other business partners with ad-hoc analytics projects.

The perfect person will have:

  • Bachelors degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, or related discipline;
  • Minimum five years experience in data and analytics;
  • Strong SQL skills;
  • Strong programming ability in Python, R, and/or related languages relevant to machine learning and analytics projects (interview process to involve programming exercise);
  • Data visualization and report building experience using Power BI and/or Tableau;
  • Familiarity with MS Azure and/or AWS platform and tools;
  • Experience developing and using machine learning models to identify business driver levers.
