General Summary

The chosen candidate will lead the technical advancement of the Hawthorne Hardware category and partner with the Category Manager to plan and execute a product innovation pipeline that supports the business strategic goals. Hawthorne’s Hardware products are designed for use in indoor Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) as well as greenhouses and include benches, racks, and trays, harvest equipment, aeration and irrigation supplies, as well as other tools professional growers demand. The role will also support other product categories as needed based upon the selected candidate’s skill set and the evolving project needs in the Growing Environment and Lighting categories.  

Key Work Performed

  • Develop a multi-year innovation and product improvement pipeline for the Hardware category in collaboration with the category manager

  • Identify product improvements that will allow Hawthorne to tighten specifications, improve performance claims, improve manufacturing, and improve quality for Hardware products

  • Drive the execution of a portfolio of innovation products for the category through individual contributions as well as contributions from external contractors

  • Manage relationships with domestic and international OEM suppliers related to the category while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specifications

  • Participate in the initial production phases of product/process design and all subsequent manufacturing inquiries and problems

  • Seek out innovations above and beyond current capabilities

  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research in problem areas or areas of opportunity for the business

  • Keep abreast of new technologies for the purpose of recommending changes in existing programs or new programs warranted by such developments

  • Partner closely with other Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the categories they support

  • Travel up to 10% of the time

Minimum Requirements

A.      Education:  

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or related degree

B.      Experience: 

  • 2-5 years experience in product development in R&D or related department

  • Knowledge or experience in horticulture, hydroponic, or controlled environment ag (CEA) preferred

C.      Skills and Abilities: 

  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams

  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Excellent quantitative skills
