We are looking for a Formulations Operator who will grow at our Operations Facility in Ft. Madison, IA!

During this time of uncertainty, Scotts Miracle-Gro is taking extra precautions to protect the health, safety and financial wellness of our associates. We have taken additional measures to ensure proper sanitation of our facilities for our front line associates.

This position will be responsible for performing various jobs associated with the formulation of lawn/garden products and management of the plant utilities and hazardous waste system.

What you'll do in this role:

  • Monitor plant utility operations: water treatment, Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems, air compressor systems, and steam and condensate systems.
  • Assist with the formulation process.  Work includes, but is not limited to, the batching process, transferring of products to storage tanks, and entering production work orders.
  • Unload tank trucks and rail cars of bulk raw materials.
  • Work closely with planning, lab, and production teams to assure the availability of quality products when required.
  • Assist in production line changeovers.  Work includes, but is not limited to, providing rinse materials, totes, hoses, antifoam, and piping connections.
  • Stage raw materials (drum, totes, bags, super sacks) to the formulation process using automated equipment such as, but not limited to, forklifts and drum haulers once training is complete.
  • Follow prescribed directions to calculate the amount of chemicals needed to formulate the volume of product specified in the production schedule once training is complete.
  • Assist with the inventory of raw material process and management of all plant waste streams. Will work with the hazardous waste streams once properly trained and qualified.
  • Follow all safety procedures and practices and use proper safety equipment for each specific job assigned or area involved.  Perform safety inspections or checks. 
  • Must actively maintain and improve housekeeping in the department and assigned area.
  • Completes special projects or other duties as assigned.

The perfect person will have:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Flexible around work hours, rotating shifts, and available for overtime
  • Requires strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Math skills, including knowledge of the metric system (conversions of weights and volumes)
  • Must have moderate computers skills and knowledge of current software (Excel, Word, SAP, Gmail)
  • Must be able to wear a variety of personal protective equipment; including respirators
  • Ability to work safely around various chemicals and promote safe work practices
  • Good attendance
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with the team members at all levels and follow written and oral instructions
  • General understanding of machinery and mechanics is required
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must possess the aptitude to make sound judgments in regards to associate safety
  • Ability to operate forklift
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, twist, climb and lift for duration of shift
  • Follow all Safety Guidelines to ensure that all associates remain uninjured
