We're looking for a Lead Market Intelligence, Commodity Manager to join the Scotts Miracle-Gro Supply Chain team in Marysville, OH!

Brief overview of the role:

This position is responsible for the Strategic Procurement of Raw Materials to support multiple internal and third party manufacturing locations throughout North America in addition to leading a team of Sourcing/Procurement professionals; Measuring/managing commodity risk..

In this role you will get to:

  • Create and implement comprehensive procurement strategies for Raw materials covering market trends, supply assurance, quality improvement, supplier development, sustainability, and financial & supply risk mitigation
  • Lead a team of 2-3 Sourcing/Procurement professionals
  • Effectively manage relationships with manufacturing facilities
  • Develop and implement cost savings projects and financial forecasting
  • Negotiate and execute contractual agreements in accordance to established company policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance related process and procedures are uncompromised
  • Develop disruption mapping and mitigation strategies
  • Foster and maintain supplier relationships
  • Lead supplier selection and development process while working with cross-functional teams like R&D, Marketing, Quality etc. to develop innovative products across the SMG Brands
  • Ensure suppliers are following Scotts sustainability guidelines and implementing required actions
  • Lead evaluation of supplier capabilities, cost structure, risks, and partnership potential to determine supply base
  • Travel as required (Domestic & International)

You will also measure and manage risk:

MEASURING risks like the following:

  • Gathering total corporate commodity exposure--both direct exposure for commodity
    purchases such as fertilizers and energy (diesel, gasoline, natural gas,
    electricity) and indirect exposures via commodity pass-through pricing
    agreements (resin, linerboard, methanol) both explicit (i.e. formula
    based) and implied (pricing changes at supplier's discretion based on
    market conditions).
  • Tracking historical volatility of the commodities via market price tracking.

MANAGING risk like the following:

  • Understanding corporate risk tolerance level.
  • Developing a hedging plan and understanding the risk reduction of the plan.
    Aligning the plan with key stakeholders.
  • Hedging commodities that provide the greatest portfolio risk reduction for the
    least cost.
  • Ensuring compliance with hedge accounting rules where applicable.

Hedging urea (a specific part of MANAGING risk)

  • Developing a hedging strategy
  • Ensuring that hedges are placed with the proper documentation of decision and
    delegation authorities per policy.
  • Ensuring that all swaps comply with hedge accounting requirements.
  • Assigning designation documents to each swap.
  • Completing quarterly swap reconciliations to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Quarterly reporting of all hedge activities to the controller.

The perfect candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree focused in Supply Chain Management, Packaging, Procurement, Accounting/Finance, Economics, or Business Administration. Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum 4 years experience in a people leadership position within Procurement, Sourcing or Purchasing
  • Ability to coordinate and organize numerous material requirements for multiple plants and contract manufacturing facilities simultaneously, while effectively sourcing suppliers and negotiating contracts for targeted materials
  • Ability to effectively navigate in a regulated industry
  • Experience managing risk/hedging commodities.
  • Knowledge of technical language of R&D (and often the vendors) and the business language of the Brands and Purchasing
  • Strong computer skills (SAP R/3, SAP/PLM, MS office programs)

  • Creative/Out-of-box thinking and ability to successfully sell ideas in a large organization
  • Ability to succeed in a competitive, fast-paced environment
  • Consumer Products or Retail experience a plus
