We are looking for an Intellectual Property Legal Manager who will join our Legal Department team.

 The Intellectual Property (IP) Corporate Legal Manager will assist in the support, management, development and enforcement of all brand-related intellectual property, including being the chief steward and custodian of the Company’s large worldwide trademark portfolio. The position will be directly engaged in formulating and executing prosecution and enforcement strategies, in collaboration with internal business clients, other internal legal professionals and outside counsel. The attorney in this position will be expected to work on various development and enforcement projects/matters around the world, as well as manage a large portfolio of trademarks and related registrations. The position also requires the preparation and development of commercial agreements in field of intellectual property, including licenses, settlement agreements, coexistence agreements, intracompany agreements and other related agreements.

 This position will report to the VP, Legal.

In this role you will:

  • Develop a deep understanding of the Company’s business, products and services and the applicable industry developments and requirements;
  • Conduct trademark clearance searches and provide opinions and recommendations within the organization on new trademarks, new products and/or trade dress;
  • Prepare and finalize trademark filings around the world, prosecute trademark applications at the USPTO and formulate strategies with outside counsel to prosecute applications to registration throughout the world;
  • Formulate strategies in conjunction with the in-house legal team, outside counsel and internal branding teams and execute on various global trademark and other brand protection enforcement activities including USPTO interparties proceedings, trademark litigation and trade dress enforcement actions;
  • Provide legal advice and updates to internal teams and legal colleagues on regarding brand related IP development activities and enforcement actions;
  • Work collaboratively throughout the organization to develop and maintain strong working relationships with Legal Department and other intra-company clients;
  • Manage the trademark budget for the Legal Department;
  • Understand and be able to translate into “plain English” the legal ramifications of varied legal issues and be able to clearly articulate advice and risks as appropriate to various groups, including internal brand teams and business clients, legal colleagues, and executives;
  • Proactively communicate and manage expectations with multiple stakeholders;
  • Prepare and provide presentations to Legal Department and business partners as needed;
  • Manage trademark paralegal role within the Legal Department;
  • Support organizational M&A activities involving IP;
  • Report to organizational corporate boards on IP activities and work on activities for same

The perfect person will have:

  • Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar is required;
  • 4-8 years of experience with some combination of managing or leading trademark development, clearance and enforcement matters, with additional experience developing and enforcing other brand related intellectual property; In-house experience a plus
  • Advanced understanding of trademark prosecution, trademark enforcement and brandrelated IP portfolio management
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of IP basics;
  • Significant experience clearing, preparing, maintaining trademark and other brand related rights in the United States and worldwide and experience managing portfolios of brand related IP rights;
  • Significant experience managing and developing strategies for trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the USPTO;
  • Significant experience in advising legal team and business clients on IP activities and enforcement matters and developing strategies in managing brands and trademarks;
  • Good understanding of litigation procedures and strategies related to brand enforcement;
  • Demonstrated business acumen, including the ability to develop overall strategies for the organization in the area of brand and trademark protection;
  • Ability to build credibility and provide strong legal support for complex and challenging business opportunities.
