General Summary

This position is responsible for performing qualification testing on new and existing mechanical products, as well as supporting design development, documentation and prototype development utilizing established procedures. The Packaging and Applicator Specialist position draws on a technical background for task-oriented duties and high attention to detail for documentation activities. 

Candidate must have obtained at least a minimal amount of engineering training and experience as he or she will be assisting engineers with the design, testing, and commercialization of SMG’s products.  Additional responsibilities include attending project meetings, creating purchase orders and tracking expenses.  The candidate will also support various testing and reporting activities related to Corporate Safety, New Product Development Quality, and 5S efforts.

Key Worked Performed

Percent of Time

Performs product qualification and failure mode analysis testing

under the direction of project engineers. Summarizes results into

standardized report form. Maintains database of all test results.


Assembles and assists in the fabrication of development prototypes and Marketing samples utilizing materials including plastics, wood,

and metals.


Assists in the development and revision of product specification documents and test procedures  under the direction of the Documentation Engineer, including part modification


Assists department staff with miscellaneous administrative tasks, including shipping, filing, sample product acquisition, etc.


Assists in maintaining the department labs in a safe, clean, and working order, including all tools and equipment.


Practices and promotes activities in compliance with corporate

Environmental, Health, and Safety principles.



Most difficult or most complex task or project performed by the jobholder:

  • Writing concise, comprehensive technical reports as a result of summarized test data and general findings.
  • Fabricating prototypes using various methods which are dimensionally accurate and cosmetically appealing.
  • New product ideation and innovation

            Approximate time necessary to complete this task or project from start to completion:

            1 day – 4 weeks, depending on project complexity.  Packaging Platform Management can be assigned once candidate demonstrates necessary acumen. These project can be 12+ months.  

Degree to which responsibilities require original thinking (provide examples of activities):

Medium to start – Carries out duties in accordance with established product development procedures. Makes suggestions to improve procedures. Periodic improvising skills are necessary to select best methods for building low cost, effective product mockups.

The incumbent will be required to recognize unusual results from preparation and testing of prototypes (e.g., leakage, inconsistent application rate, etc.), and proactively report possible failure events to the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

A.         Education (minimum):

HS Diploma or 2 year Technical Certification.

B.         Experience:

Six months minimum continuous part- or full-time employment.

C.         Knowledge:

Ability to read and interpret engineering specification documents Working knowledge of hand and power tools, including safety practices Basic understanding of thermoplastic materials, related manufacturing processes, and packaging platforms (bottles, bags, closures, applicators, boxes, etc.)

D.         Skills and Abilities:

Functional with basic PC-based software (e.g., MS Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) CAD & 3D modeling experience a plus Self-motivated and reliable Demonstrated interpersonal skills, teamwork, and professionalism.
