Scotts Miracle-Gro Live Goods team is looking for an innovative, forward thinking, Plant Scientist who wants to develop the next generation solutions to inspire people of all ages to express themselves on their own piece of the Earth.  The Research Horticulturist aka Live Goods Scientist will work across a spectrum of customer products such as garden plants, houseplants. foliage, veggie, and herbs. The successful candidate will be working in a fast past, collaborative team environment with other scientists, marketing and sales.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Lead execution of scientific experiments that may include the evaluation of horticultural genetics, postharvest physiology, growing media, fertilizer and crop protection.

  • Oversee greenhouse plant production including planting, environmental monitoring, pest control, plant growth regulator applications, watering, feeding, and general maintenance.

  • Oversee garden research trials including preparing, planting, developing timelines for key trial activities, and overall caring for field trials.

  • Summarize and present research to leadership.

  • Oversee data entry and taking photographs.

  • Prepare project timelines and track progress on design through implementation.

  • Work flexible hours when needed, including occasional weekends.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Minimum Masters Degree in horticulture with experience in greenhouse production.

  • Preference for 3+ years’ in floriculture industry experience and/or post-harvest physiology experience.

  • Plug and/or liner production experience.

  • Understands variety screening and trialing work.

  • Plant nutrition and crop protection products experience.

  • Experience with statistical design and analysis.

  • Strong communication skills, with demonstrated skill in oral and written communication.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and teamwork; Commitment to one team mentality.

  • Experience presenting information effectively that a diverse audience can understand.

  • Strong work ethic and willing to “push up sleeves and jump in” to be a team player.

  • Ability to multitask, while being attentive to detail and staying organized.
