We are looking for a Product Development Manager who will join our Hawthorne team in Vancouver, WA.

The chosen candidate will lead product development/product improvement R&D activities for the Hawthorne Growing Environment and Hardware categories through both individual contributions and management of an R&D team.  Growing Environment category includes fans, filters, humidification/ dehumidification, and HVAC products.  Hardware includes greenhouse benches, racks, and trays, harvest equipment, aeration and irrigation supplies, as well as other tools professional growers demand. The Engineering Manager will partner with the Category Managers to design and execute a product innovation pipeline that supports the business strategic goals.  The Engineering Manager will also create a resourcing plan for the project pipeline in collaboration with the Director of Hawthorne R&D that balances the use of external contractors with internal resources within the constraints of the annual operating budget.  

The ideal candidate will be self-driven with an eagerness to grow these categories and identify new innovation opportunities within a rapidly growing hydroponic industry.  

What you’ll do in this role: 

  • Develop a multi-year innovation and product improvement pipeline and manage the execution of the plan with internal team as well as external partners

  • Identify product improvements that will allow Hawthorne to tighten specifications, improve performance claims, improve manufacturing, and improve quality for existing engineered products that Hawthorne  

  • Manage the resourcing of projects through a balance of individual contributions, internal team contributions, and external contractors and drive the resources to deliver to the timelines

  • Lead the R&D engineering team responsible for the Growing Environment and Hardware categories through goal-setting, mentoring, monitoring of work execution, and providing feedback through the annual review process

  • Manage technical relationships with domestic and international OEM partners while also holding them accountable to product requirements and quality specification

  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research in problem areas or areas of opportunity 

  • Keep abreast of new technologies for the purpose of recommending changes in existing products or creating new products warranted by such developments

  • Partner closely with Category Managers to ensure they are armed with ample technical knowledge on the categories they support

  • Partner with technical services team to ensure that products developed are properly communicated to sales team and customers and transition to the market is seamless; this may include providing technical content and assisting in training material creation and/or presentation

  • Collaborate and communicate across departments including: category, manufacturing, quality, procurement, marketing, finance, and project management 

  • Travel up to 10% of time, sometimes internationally to Europe and Asia

What you’ll need to be successful: 

  • Masters or PhD in mechanical or electrical engineering field preferred

  • BS in engineering with significant product development experience considered

  • Minimum 8 years of product development experience in R&D or related department preferred

  • Minimum 3 years of management experience required

  • Knowledge or experience in horticulture, hydroponic, or controlled environment ag (CEA) preferred

  • Ability to set strategic direction and manage a team to support the vision

  • Ability to interact with and contribute to cross-functional teams

  • Ability to handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously

  • Ability to present technical information to non-technical stakeholders

  • Drive to deliver products on time with attention to quality

  • Strong negotiation skills with global suppliers
