We are looking for a Research Scientist who will join our Controls team in Marysville, OH.

The Research Scientist, Controls will lead the biological requirements of projects to launch new and improved products for our pest control business segment, focusing on plant pathology, insect pathogen ecology and disease/insect/plant interactions as related to the management of these pests in residential and professional gardens, landscapes, and greenhouses.  The Scientist will constantly mine the realm of technologies and match them to both articulated and unarticulated consumer needs to drive the controls category and our business.


The Research Scientist, Pesticide Controls will participate extensively in their respective business segment as a hands-on consumer and a hands-on researcher to fully understand our products, competitors, gaps and develop cutting-edge biological research methods.

What you’ll do in this role:

  • Lead, initiate and provide hands-on support for the conduct of sound, professional biological research.

  • Develop commercially viable products consistent with business unit goals.

  • Design and execute experimental plans, summarize results in research reports, and communicate effectively to a cross-functional team.

  • Plan and implement major biological research programs that deliver professional research results leading to clear decisions.

  • Effectively use internal and external resources including Scotts’ research stations, universities, and independent contract researchers.

  • Drive innovation and future direction by interaction with industry experts, universities, sources of consumer insights and regional research station experts.

  • Understand new technologies, new biological research methods, consumer trends, and regional differences.

  • Provide technical assistance to R&D, marketing, regulatory, sourcing, quality, and manufacturing.

  • Contribute to the Product Development Team to raise overall team contributions and performance.

  • Manage chemical inventory and Safety Data Sheet storage and archiving;

  • Prepare and arrange chemical samples for shipment and waste, per DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations;

  • Perform all project tasks in compliance with corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety principles.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Masters of Science degree in Plant Pathology with significant industry experience in conducting sound, professional biological research with successful, relevant product launches.  Ph.D. in Plant Pathology is most preferred. Bachelor of Science with consistent experience will be considered.

  • Experience with Industrial hemp and other plants.

  • Experience in common plant pathogens and insects in the garden, with the familiarity of all current, emerging and alternative fungicide and insecticide active ingredients.

  • Scout and test new technologies, recommend and develop new products, create enticing product claims and identify cost-saving opportunities.

  • Demonstrated ability to design and lead research programs to answer specific questions and/or solve problems.

  • Experience in conducting biological research to control diseases and pests on ornamental plants and high-value crops with novel products or technologies.

  • A broad awareness of consumer and professional lawn and garden products and practices; hands-on experience is desirable.

  • A strong aptitude for garden/crop management conversions and mathematics.

  • Experience performing Statistical Analysis using ARM, Minitab, JMP or similar software programs.

  • Scientific curiosity, personal drive, and networking abilities to find breakthrough technologies, product improvements and novel methods.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate effectively with key stakeholders to influence direction, enable decisions and make progress.

  • Adaptability and flexibility to work independently as well as in a team environment
